“An impressive and modern apartment with elevated views along the ever changing Thames”

Enviably positioned on the north bank of the Thames between Limehouse Basin and Shadwell, this fantastic three-bedroom apartment unfolds over the fourth floor of the Mauretania Building. Set back from the Thames Path and enjoying panoramic views of the ever-changing waterway, expansive banks of glazing ensure that natural light abounds. There is lift access, and a terrace with space for seating flows across the full width of the apartment’s riverside aspect. The owners have comprehensively refurbished the interior, removing internal walls and applying a sensitive material and colour palette. An underground car space is included.

The Tour

The apartment flows off an entrance hall laid with light-wash engineered oak flooring, which continues throughout the apartment. With plenty of storge throughout the apartment, the primary room is set at one end of the plan and has dedicated kitchen, dining and living areas. Here, full-height, full-width banks of glazing frame views of the River Thames, with additional banks of glazing to the other side of the room ensuring a light-filled environment. From the living area, a sliding glass door opens onto a terrace that flows across the full width of the apartment.

The kitchen, by Rotpunkt, is placed to the rear of the main room aside another bank of wide full-height glazing, and is demarcated from the living room by a wide island with bespoke Walnut cabinetry and a quartz worktop. A Neff induction hob is built into the island, served by a rising extraction panel. The main worktop, opposite the island, is also of Walnut and houses a steel sink with a Quooker tap, with open teak shelving above. A splashback behind the sink reveals fossil-like patterns when lit. Twin Neff ovens, a microwave, a steam oven and larder cupboard are set in a tall section of biscuit-coloured cabinetry against the end wall. The dining area is next to the living area, beside the front glazing.

In the main bedroom, a set of sliding glazed doors open to the terrace. The bedhead wall is painted in a chalky grey; there are built-in wardrobes in this room, and a pocket door opens to a dressing area and en suite. This space is laid with rubber flooring in light grey. A desk in the dressing room is set in front of tall windows with Thames views. A set of sliding mirrored doors open to wardrobes, and at the end of the room a wide walk-in shower is set behind a frameless glass screen. Walls here are laid with white hexagonal ceramic tiles. The sink rests on a floating grey cabinet with a flush mirror cabinet above. There is a frosted Thames-facing window opposite the shower.

The second bedroom is also a double and is situated at the front of the plan. A wide bank of floor to ceiling windows cast natural light over the room and offer views across the front terrace. There is a deep in-built wardobe, and a set of grey cut-in shelves sit above the bedhead; the wall behind the shelves and on either side of the bed are painted a pale yellow. There is a further double bedroom, currently used as a study, where there are a further set of wide windows to the rear.

To complete the plan a bathroom is set behind a pocket door, and here large biscuit coloured wall tiles rise from the black ceramic tiles that ground the space. There is a wide, squared floating sink served by black taps, a large bath at end of the room, and a walk in shower with black framed sliding glass door.

Outdoor Space

A terrace flows along the entire riverside frontage of the apartment. Laid with decking and bounded by steel railings, the space is planted with pots and has space for seating. Here, one can take in the delightful river views and spot waterbirds, riverboats and the occasional seal, all from the comfort of this private and elevated vantage point. In addition, there is also a small terrace to the front of the apartment which is planted with wisteria, climbing along the railings in pots.

The Area

Mauretania Building is brilliantly positioned on the River Thames, with many beautiful walks available directly from the building. Local parks include King Edward Memorial Park and Ropemakers’ Fields. Two of Hawksmoor’s baroque architectural masterpieces, St Anne’s Church at Limehouse and St George’s Church at Shadwell, are close by. Local restaurants, pubs and cafés are numerous, including Bistro Bardot in Wapping; a farmers’ market operates from Shadwell Basin on weekends, while Urban Baristas is an excellent coffee shop nearby. The Yurt Café is a noted establishment in Limehouse, and E5 Poplar Bakehouse is just along the canal at the Limehouse Cut. Further restaurants on Narrow Street include famed pub and restaurant The Grapes, Gordon Ramsey’s Bread Street Kitchen and La Figa. The brilliant Mala Indian and The Gun pub are both located at Canary Wharf. Shadwell Basin is a 10-minute walk from the apartment, and is home to an outdoor activity centre which offers aquatic sports, climbing and mountain biking for all ages.

Transport links are excellent; Limehouse DLR is just eight minutes’ walk away for connections to Fenchurch Street, for National Rail services, and Bank, which connects to the Central, Northern and Waterloo & City lines. The Uber Boat by Thames Clippers runs services throughout the day from Canary Wharf Pier, stopping at central locations on the river, including Westminster and Embankment. Additionally, Cycle Superhighway 3 runs directly along nearby Cable Street, connecting The City, Central London and Canary Wharf via a cycle-only pathway that runs its entire length.
