Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Eduardo Paolozzi are among the 48 artists whose work is on display as part of the Barbican’s latest exhibition. ‘Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain 1945-1965’ showcases around 200 paintings, photographs and sculptures. Alongside a roster of revered British names, it also shines a light on artists who came to the UK escaping Nazism, such as Frank Auerbach, Franciszka Themerson and Gustav Metzger. In typical Barbican spirit, the monumental exhibition is divided into 14 thematic chapters, which unpick the richness, form and materials of the art of this period. From 3 March to 26 June 2022.

If there’s anything to get you in the mood for a good breakfast, it’s a light-filled morning. As March means extra hours of sunshine (even though the clocks don’t go forward until the end of the month, the difference is already mighty), the timing couldn’t be better for The Barbary Next Door in Soho, London, to open its doors that bit earlier for dining. Launching on 10 March, its new breakfast and brunch menu is inspired by the food of Moorish Spain and North Africa. Served from 9 am, delicious plates such as sfenj, ras-el-hanout (pumpkin-based bread with pumpkin and sunflower clotted cream) and maaqooda (a Moroccan tortilla with pickled peppers). They’re sure to tempt you to town – morning person or not. Open Thursday-Sunday every week.

Given Pablo Picasso’s status as a pioneer of modernist art, it’s not surprising that the 19th-century works have often been overlooked – until now. The Sainsbury Centre in Norfolk is highlighting the early years of Picasso’s life and career between 1894, when he was a teen in Màlaga to 1914, by which time he was in Paris and well on the rise. Both recognisable and rare paintings and drawings by Picasso neighbour some of his greatest inspirations, including Claude Monet and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, while exploring his artistic frolics in impressionism, symbolism, and cubism. ‘Pablo Picasso: The Legacy of Youth’ is on display from 17 March to 17 July 2022.

To celebrate the launch of Safia Shakarchi’s new venture, Another Pantry, a platform championing slow and conscious cooking, the chef and food writer is hosting a pop-up grocery store at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross, north London. It shares the same focus on the food community as her online site and will be selling products from our foodie friends, including cider from Merlin Labron-Johnson’s Osip; wine from St John Bread & Wine; and olive oil from Max Rocha’s Café Cecilia, and much more. Oh, and later this month, we’re paying Safia a visit for a taste of her very own home cooking. Keep your eyes peeled.

The worlds of food and flowers combine as the organic perfume brand Ffern collaborates with acclaimed chef Skye Gyngell of Spring on a new fragrance. The scent, titled Spring 22, was born out of a conversation between one of the namesake noses Elodie Ffern and Skye, in which they discussed their love of the finest natural ingredients. (Side note: stay tuned to our sister agency’s Almanac as the two minds meet for an interview later this month.) Airy floral notes and culinary flavours cherry-picked by Skye, such as gooseberry, elderflower, peppermint and lime, define the scent, which is available to purchase on 20 March – the first day of the season, naturally.
