Take Root: nine homes with gorgeous gardens for sale
If the blue skies and warm days of the past few weeks are anything to go by, summer is fast approaching – and so too are long alfresco lunches and weekends spent pottering around the garden. Whether you’re partial to a compact easy-care courtyard or glorious rolling grounds, we can all agree that when the sun shines, homes with gardens are gold. In search of your own? Scroll on to discover nine listings we’re lusting over, each with particularly inspiring pockets of outdoor space.
Westleigh, Lydeard St Lawrence, Somerset
It comes with a lovingly tended and – perhaps more importantly – productive vineyard, you say? Yes, please. This seven-bedroom converted barn in Somerset sits in pleasing dialogue with the gardens and grounds that surround it. While the wonderfully preserved exterior sings in tune with the rural vernacular, the contemporary interiors open on to beautifully planted walled courtyards, terraces and balconies. Measuring an acre and a half, much of the garden is given over to lawn, with the house slightly sunken in the landscape. The result is postcard pretty – and the perfect place to enjoy that glass of wine.
Aisby, Grantham, Lincolnshire
This exceptional five-bed in Lincolnshire was designed by German company Hauf Haus – a manufacturer of pre-fab, Bauhaus-inspired homes – and is one of only 300 of its kind in the UK. Just like the house, which measures more than 3,600sq ft, the garden speaks volumes. The 12-acre space includes beautifully landscaped grounds and rich wildflower meadows, ever-inspiring backdrops on blue-skied days. We also love the thriving kitchen garden, snaking pathways, perfectly shaped bushes, mature trees and, of course, the hot tub. The whole arrangement is so lovely, in fact, that its current owners have previously opened it to the public through the National Garden Scheme.
Claremont Gardens, London KT6
The clean lines of this three-bedroom apartment, which sits within a beautiful Victorian villa in Surbiton, are echoed by the south-facing walled garden that accompanies it. Raised beds – dense with mature plants and shrubs – line the perimeter and are painted white in a nod to both the potted philadelphus and the minimal interiors. The kitchen – defined by a sleek white Corian worktop – spans the entire width of the garden, which is reached through sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Walk outside and you’ll find an L-shaped poured concrete terrace, which plays host to a dining table and chairs for whiling away summer afternoons.
Selling Court, Faversham, Kent
Just shy of an acre, the garden accompanying this 1960s house in the North Downs is full of delights. There’s a lovely little trail, for example, which winds its way along a Kentish ragstone wall, passing towering pine and mature fruit frees. Equally appealing is the characterful south-facing courtyard, which has plenty of space for outdoor seating. Then there’s the mix of deliciously scented, bee-friendly plants (lavender, roses and honeysuckle), as well as a bountiful veg patch – ideal if you need some supper inspiration. Everything can be enjoyed from the comfort of the house too, where an assortment of floor-to-ceiling, picture and arched windows frame views of the garden.
Hilmarton, Calne, Wiltshire
Calling those with green fingers: this might be the one for you. After all, the gardens of this thoughtfully renovated family home in Wiltshire are the stuff of rural dreams. From the fruitful orchard – rich with apple and damson trees – to the vegetable patches, there’s lots of opportunity for growing here. Elsewhere, a generous sun-soaked terrace, which wraps around the south and west sides of the house, is perfect for enjoying a morning coffee and an evening cocktail. Not only does it catch the rays, but its views of the surrounding countryside (accessed directly via an ideally placed gate) are nothing short of idyllic. An outdoor pizza oven, you say? Yes, it has that too.
Raleigh Gardens, London SW2
Part of the joy of this magical jungle-like garden in Brixton is that it’s rather unexpected, particularly when you consider the more traditional façade of the Victorian home it belongs to. Inside, however, it’s the meticulously renovated kitchen that steals the show, thanks to the Crittal-style doors leading to the peaceful patio and fill the room with views of greenery. Outside, wander up the slate shingle to the back of the garden and there are an array of tropical plants to pore over, such as banana, palm and fern trees, as well as sweet-smelling magnolias and lilies. A far cry from your typical English garden, this oasis scores top marks for transporting us out of the city.
Dingley Place II, London EC1
Gardens – as this Clerkenwell courtyard proves – need not always be about lawns. In fact, for those averse to digging and in search of a low-maintenance option this warehouse apartment is just the ticket. Concrete floor tiles run underfoot from the open-plan living area and out to the neat terrace – connected by large sliding glass doors – creating a seamless link between inside and out. This garden might be small in size, but it surely makes a grand impression: note the soaring walls that surround the outdoor space and support climbers and palm trees that pack in colour and keep it feeling private.
Willowhayne Avenue, Angmering-on-Sea, West Sussex
There’s a lot to love about the garden at this 1930s modernist house in Angmering-on-Sea in West Sussex. We particularly admire the various ways there are to reach it – one of our favourites being via the staircase that spirals down from the main bedroom’s balcony. (We wouldn’t say no to setting up camp on that particular south-facing space for the day either.) A ground-floor patio calls for alfresco dining and can be – bonus points – used in nearly all weather, thanks to the first-floor terrace that shelters it. The garden itself consists of a stretch of lawn, with planted borders featuring herbs, comfrey and hydrangeas. Oh, and you can hear the sea here.
Sewdley Street II, London E5
There’s double the fun at this Victorian house in Clapton, which comes with both a landscaped garden and a roof terrace. The garden, reached from the open-plan living area through bi-fold doors, offers a patio and a small stretch of lawn. The latter is flanked by borders planted with mature trees and a large palm, creating shady spots for afternoon naps. But the real treat – especially when it comes to relaxing – is that roof terrace, which has more than enough space for sunning yourself. Best of all, it’s next to the main bedroom – on a lazy morning, you can roll out of bed and straight on to a lounger.
